SGH Experience Day 5:
SGH Reunited
September 29th 2005
Alright I admit it. You win, fuck you. I thought I could go my own way with music, but I need the others. Makes me feel weird to say that… I spoke to Rhia the other day and I apologised for being cold. We sorted it out. You won’t believe this but after I left [Sweat Glass Halo] she ended up writing a song about me. It’s embarrassing but I can’t help but respect it. It’s called I’m Not A Drum Machine… Hate to say it, but it’s pretty good. Elliott’s gonna set up some kit he got from Jim [Julian, producer and friend of the band] and we’re gonna try and record some demos. We all have lots of ideas.
SGH album coming 2006? Maybe?
Listen to the band's demo of I'm Not A Drum Machine:

Over the next few months, the band would write many songs together, usually stemming from an initial idea Ash would bring to the table.
Below you can see a first draft of the song “Sorry I Almost Killed Your Girlfriend (And You)” that Ash scribbled in his notes on November 13th, 2005, featuring the beginnings of a scrapped 2nd verse.

"Killed Yr Gf" Lyrics: Annotated
Sweat Glass Halo - Sorry I Almost Killed Your Girlfriend (And You)
Sorry I Almost Killed Your Girlfriend (And You)
You can talk shit ‘hind my back
‘Hind my back, but we didn’t even roll
You can talk words and be scared
Rem’ber when, when we almost lost control
You can say it’s fine, cos it’s fine
Really fine, and brush it off
And white lies later, she’s safe behind her door
I’m sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you) [1]
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend
And you can call the shots
Talk a lot, ’bout the government [2]
You can find fun in murphy’s words,
Murphy’s words, like a summer hunt
Every time I hear, Murphy’s words
Murphy’s words, I unravel [3]
And two songs later we’re making sense of what just happened
Making sense and I’m saying
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
Sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)
If you wanna hang out, we can hang out (Ahh-ahh)
Just come as you are, and so will I, [4]
As the guy who killed your girlfriend (And you)
I’m the guy who killed your girlfriend (And you)
I’m the guy who killed your girlfriend (And you)
I’m the guy who killed your girlfriend (And you)
I’m the guy who killed your girlfriend (And you)
I’m the guy who killed your girl
ANNOTATIONS:
[1] – Remember Rhys, the voice at the end of “NOW! That’s What I Call Closure”? This song is about how I got into a car accident while driving him, his girlfriend, and one of my other best friends Alfie.
I was very embarrassed about the whole ordeal and for a while after was anxious that the 3 of them would talk shit behind my back about it, even though they were partially at fault for distracting me while I was driving. So this song is a mixture embarrassment and a sarcastic flavour of anger.
[2] – Once, Alfie, Rhys and I were on a tram into the city and we were talking about government sleeper agents, when an older lady joined in our conversation, expressing some horribly racist views, thinking we would agree with her…
She said “I’m glad you young folks have some sense” to which I accidentally said to her face “yeah, can’t say the same about you,” and luckily, she walked off without making a scene.
[3] – Referencing James Murphy, frontman of LCD Soundsystem, a band I love. The first time I played LCD Soundsystem in my car I got pulled over by the police shortly after (that’s a story for another time), and the second time LCD played, this whole ordeal happened. I’ve learned my lesson now: James Murphy is banned from my car.
[4] – Reference to the song “Come As You Are” by Nirvana. If you listen closely, the bass actually plays the “Come As You Are” riff briefly before the big distorted section kicks in. It’s in there somewhere!

Closure, the worst shit is over… Man this year has been like plucking arse hairs with a spatula. Difficult. This time last year I was trying to fall asleep in my car while fireworks kept me awake all night. Tonight, I’ll be the one keeping people awake.
My dad called earlier to wish me a happy new year. We talked a little bit and I told him [Elliot, Rhia and I] were planning on getting into the studio soon to record an album. He was excited for me and told me some stories about when he was recording with The Wrists back in the 70s. Stories I’d heard before, but I didn’t mind hearing again.
Just listening to “She’s The One” [by The Wrists] now. Shit lyrics, but man that guitar has energy… Just threw up a little bit.

[Sweat Glass Halo] is done, or rather, I’m done with SGH. Everything’s a ballache and I’m not having any fun. Elliot’s been pissing me off lately cos he keeps trying to push the songs in a more dancey direction and just tryna electrisize everything. Rhia’s pissing Elliot off by being stubborn and not taking stuff onboard (which I respect). And I’m pissing Rhia off I think by pretending to be normal around her despite the weirdness of the past few weeks. I don’t know what else to say or do with that whole situation. I feel like she despises me but wants something more…?
I can’t be arsed with indecision, so I’m just out of here.
