Happy (late) new year! [Sweat Glass Halo has] pretty much finished writing the new album. Been thinking of names, here’s a few:

  • Cool Story Bro
  • Kleine Praat Big Words (Small Talk Big Words)
  • Knackered Frenzied Heart Attack
  • The Poo Album
  • It Is What It Is, You Know What I Mean?

The other day [Elliot, Rhia and I] were having a drink at the Staring Hound [Bar in Anagood] & Benn Hickes [musician] appeared out of nowhere. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, he pisses me off. So I pretended I knew some people and moved. Anyway, while I was gone, two guys Phil & Joey came up to Elliot, Rhia & Benn and saw that Benn had a guitar, and they broke into song on the street and Phil gave them some sage advice (as sage as you can get from a 25 year old).

I know all this because Benn pulled out a pocket field recorder and captured the whole thing, and emailed it to me yesterday with the subject “What you missed last night”. He’s so weird. “LouieBallad” [SGH song from their debut EP about Benn] is still so relevant…

Anyway, point is I listened to it and it sounded pretty cool to be fair, so I’m gonna put it in a SGH song sometime. Dunno which.

And I’m not gonna ask Benn before I do it because he’ll want writer’s credits.

Feels like something pretty big has happened, writing this at 3:13am cos I can’t sleep.

I was at a gig tonight, some band called Dorset Caravan. It was only their second show ever. Jonah dragged me out because he’s mates with the singer. ANYWAY, I ended up meeting this girl called Gracie and she’s just kind of out of this world. No really, she blocked Jonah’s car with her spaceship. She paints loads and she’s super into Bowie (Yeah, she’s one of those types…)

I really like her though, I respect how unapologetically ‘herself’ she is.

I think I’ve got a last minute song idea for the SGH album, one sec.

"2nd DC Gig" Lyrics: Annotated

(A bit about the song, scroll on for annotated lyrics!!)

Similarly to ‘NOW! That’s What I Call Closure’, this song took many months of trial and error before it became the song it is today. The main difficulty I faced this time was not necessarily trying to find a way to express a very specific emotion, but simply trying to think of lines that fit the song’s odd 7/4 rhythm.

For those who aren’t aware, 7/4 is a ‘time signature’ in music, and it means each bar is 7 counts long, as opposed to the far more common 4/4 time signature in popular music.

I wrote the “iconic” main riff of the song on my friend’s bass in Autumn 2025, but it took me until late March 2026 to write the melody and lyrics that you hear today, which I managed to do by opting for short repeated phrases instead of longer, wordier ones.

If you know anything about meter in poetry or literature (which I actually don’t), then you’ll probably understand why I had such a hard time writing to a rhythm I wasn’t used to. Got there in the end though. Sorry if that was boring I just thought I’d give you more context on the song…

Phil: Take my number, you lot, I don’t give a shit, we’re forming a band tonight.[1]

Tilda: Alright, alright, alright-

Mimi: What’s it called? What’s the band called?

Phil: We’re called the fucking Nigella Forever, you know what I’m saying? Hahaha. What about Carpe Diem?

Jude: Carpe Diem?

Phil: Seize the day. Carpe Diem.

Tilda: Isn’t that siempreviva?

Phil: Siem pedium?

All: Siempreviva.

Phil: Siempreviva…

Jude: It’s means to li- It means live forever.

Joey: Bare latin, that.

Phil: I can say- I can say bolognaise, carbonara and pizza as well!

[All laugh]

Nah, honestly, you guys, I’ll give you a name: Carpe Diem. Seize the moment. Big up on the radio, radio 95.4, this is Carpe Diem. Erm, but yeah, like Saint John’s fuckin’ swear on my nan’s left reebok, yeah –

[All laugh]

You lot as a fucking collective are now called Carpe Diem – I guarantee you and you have got the fucking vocal chords, and you two are the bass, man.

I Met Her At The 2nd Dorset Caravan Gig

Here we go, here we go, here we go
Electric steps, electric steps, electric regrets [2]
Off to see, off to see, off to see
Big DC, big DC, paying respects [3]
In the crowd, in the crowd, in the crowd
Turn it up, turn it up, make it loud
Got my keys, got my wallet and my keys
Turn around, double take and freeze

It was then that I met her
I could never forget her [4]

Thought I heard, thought I heard, thought I heard her
Running up, running up, up the stairs
I hoped that she, hoped that she, hoped that she
Was coming up, up for me with repairs [5]

All I felt, all I felt, all I felt
Was that I, was that I was 50 miles
Far away, far away, far away
And I remember those December styles

When, when I met her
I could never forget her
Ooh-ooh-ooh

Underneath The Rainbow (Underneath The Rainbow) [6]
If you know then you just know (If you know)
You just know!

ANNOTATIONS:

[1] – One evening, I was hanging out with my girlfriend Mimi and two friends (Jude and Tilda) who had just played an acoustic show, so they had their guitars with them. We sat outside a pub called the Hare and Hounds, and two men called Phil and Joey began to talk with us.

What followed was an hour of Phil singing along to some combination of Jude, Tilda or myself playing guitar, and I recorded the entire thing on my phone.

I never got either of their contacts and I haven’t bumped into them since, so I can only hope they’ll one day hear this song…

[2] – Ever sat there wasting time on your phone when you suddenly look up and realise how much nothing you’ve done? That’s what I call an electric regret.

[3] – Big DC, aka Dorset Caravan are a real-life band that my friend Ollie fronts, although as of July 2026, I believe they’ve taken a break while Ollie focuses on his own solo music endevours.

[4] – I met my girlfriend Mimi at the 2nd ever Dorset Caravan gig on December 19th 2025.

[5] – I wrote the second half of this song at a party my girlfriend was hosting. It was toward the end of the night and I was feeling tired and a bit upset, so I was just up chilling in her bedroom about to fall asleep while she was seeing everyone out, hoping she’d come up soon.

[6] – Dorset Caravan’s 2nd gig took place in the basement of a pub in Digbeth, Birmingham called The Rainbow. If you know then you just know, and now you know!

Phil: I didn’t even know I could do that! First fucking time I’ve done that! I swear to fuck –

Joey: Nah, yeah, yeah, that man is like –

Phil: I swear to fuck –

Joey: He’s crazy innit with the vocals.

Phil: You should’ve seen me when I was 13, I’m fucking 25. You lot, as a fucking vibe, or vibes, yeah, right?

[All laugh]

You lot have like, fucking bring yourself back to your fucking roots, man! Like these motherfuckers were playing fucking guitars in the fucking 1770s! Nah I love it guys, honestly the fucking energy is mad.

Joey: Nah, that was crazy.

Phil: Fucking mad.

Joey: I can’t believe this is hap- This has made my night. I’ve already had a sick night already but this is- this is a-

Phil: Do you think I’m gonna be able to sleep for the next 3 days after this? Are you mad? FUCKing hell.

Joey: Oh nah, no, that was ridiculous.

Phil: I didn’t know what happened there, but fuck me!

Joey: That was pretty sick, I’ve got- I’ve gotta be real.

Phil: Fucking hell, I didn’t know I had it in me.

[cut to kebab shop]

Mimi: Excuse me? Excuse me!?

Me: eXcUsE mE

Mimi: I don’t think so… I don’t a-think so! Ha! Close your lips. Close your lips!

I’m sorry I almost killed your girlfriend (And you)

Remember Rhys, the voice at the end of “NOW! That’s What I Call Closure”? This song is about how I got into a car accident while driving him, his girlfriend, and one of my other best friends Alfie.

I was very embarrassed about the whole ordeal and for a while after was anxious that the 3 of them would talk shit behind my back about it, even though they were partially at fault for distracting me while I was driving. So this song is a mixture embarrassment and a sarcastic flavour of anger.
